So what makes a classic vdub
lokerlokes quoted that the bricks are not classics, but what do you think?
So what about caddies, mk1 and 2 golfs, jetta`s, and what about the new `Bays` imported by peeps not too far away.
My opinion is that all the above are classic with the exception of the new bay. I also dont put the T4 in there yet, but in time.

most, if not all the cars/vans you have listed and some not, are no longer made. so yes you could say they are classics in there own right.
most if not all the old volkswagens that are around today have some sort of following and nearly all owners belong to an owners club/forum...
just because some older vehicles are now tax exempt does`nt make them the only classics on our roads/driveways or holed up in garages,
If the government hadn`t stopped the classic age of cars for those registered before 1972, some exptions of those in early 1973.
some of the newer 1973 onwards would have followed suite and become tax exempt themselves....
bricks/wedges /t3/ t2 5 are still classics ...
and you dont see many of them broken down on the hard shoulder/ or over heating in traffic jams...and if you do see one parked up in a layby then you will probably see the owners sat in it having a cup of rosey lea..(tea) and looking forward to their next part of their adventure....

...the politics of it...
Tough question. But here goes... Wholly subjective: ("classic" doesn't come with definitive criteria like "newest", "fastest" or "oldest" so a classic vehicle will always be a matter of opinion and interpretation). Lokes has his view, and I defend his right to hold it. I disagree with him however over the T3 (as he knows) I don't believe it to be a "future classic", on the basis that it was the last derivation of the Type 2 "forward control" vehicles, both the air cooleds and water pumpers have a historical (and in my view classic) place in VW development. And if you have a syncro, a genuine evolution vehicle. And given that the last (german) T3 rolled off the production line 18 years ago, to me it already constitutes a classic. (convincing eh?)
For what it's worth that's my opinion. As regards T4s, their time will come I am sure. But at the moment, in my book, too new to be a classic.
And by the way. Knowing Lokes, I know he loves his dubs. All of them. With a passion few can match. He likes a laugh and a joke too .

T3 should read type twenty-five. More bloody VW correctness in the mods now too!Squarepants wrote:Tough question. But here goes... I believe that the T3 is a classic, however i am not a fan of the looks. Practically yes.
Although i thought that a classic was any vehicle over 25 years old, so that would mean that the T3 design is not.

The T3 was launched in 1980 so the oldest of these is now 29 years old so I guess that makes it a classic if your looking at a 25 year rule

Re: So what makes a classic vdub
See now classic is subjective, and in my opinion, (just in case any mini drivers out there get a bit gay!!) down to the individual, and not a cliquey tosser!!
Vee dubbing has been a 'scene' long before most of us we old enough to 'sock up!" Which historically only included air cooled, even when water pumpers were about.
To clarify I like Type 25, I prefer different ones, i.e. the limited editions etc. I like syncros too, but they are rare and different. The problem with type 25, and it happens occasionally with bays and beetles, is that Grandma and Grandpa piss piss, retire from cockney town to Torquay and like to get away for the weekend to Paignton, so they buy a cheap camper van, woo hoo T BLOODY 3 for 1500 in the local paper. Are they then Vee dubbers driving a classic vehicle????? I would say no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Bays and beetles are classis by design and heritage, the later VW are classics by parentage not right, but in time they should be. Mk 1 golfs are mile markers. best GTi of their generation, syncros too, best 4 x 4 x far!!
Just because it has got a vw badge on the front does not make it a classic.
Hope that clarifies my point. Any way I'm off to buy a transit and paint a 53 on the side of it!!

Re: So what makes a classic vdub
oooh, like what they've done with the rad on the new imported Danbury bays, but nope, not a classic.
I'm 35 so does that mean I'm a classic?? Don't think age has anything to do with it really otherwise that transit I've just picked up is all about it babay, yeah!!
Max power me up beatch

Hello Lokes, not like you to be controversial
"Grandma and Grandpa piss piss" I nearly spat my beer out you bugger!
Well you're right, but it ain't gonna win you any friends!
...oh, except about the bit about 1500 quid for a 25, (pretty much only shitters out there for that price) and I doubt that Grandma piss piss would be seen dead in a shitter

The wikipedia article on classic cars and the definition thereof makes quite a good read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_car
I especially like the bit on safety where they recommend wearing a bike helmet in cars without airbags

A "light" bicycle helmet FFS. Those heavy ones are downright dangerous!Carbon wrote:The wikipedia article on classic cars and the definition thereof makes quite a good read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_car

I think your wrestling mask could be considered sufficient for a Type 25, but for a Bay or Split, a full-on helmet at least, and for an old beetle perhaps a leather one-piece too?
