Hello from South Somerset...

Post by Shamrockez on Sun 14 Jun - 15:10

Shouldn't really sign up to another forum, but it looks like I have done, so here goes lol!

I'm Lucy, and along with my boyfriend Steve, own rather a lot of (and mostly broken) Volkswagens of various shapes, sizes and shinyness! We live near Langport, which is between Taunton and Yeovil.

I'll start in the order we got them.

In 2001 I bought 'Bertie' as my first car. He's a 71 1300 and after driving him round for 18months or so, the MOT man found that his 'full resto' involved more expanding foam and filler, than new metal Sad So he's sat waiting for us to fix him:

He used to look like this when I first got him:

Next we bought 'Oscar' a late 72 Bay in 2003. We trundled round to lots of show in him for a few years until he came to the point where he needed some proper work doing to him.

Next we bought 'Joey' a 66 Split. We couldn't afford one which was on the road, so we bought him as a project. We didn't know anything about cars at that point, so Joey scared us quite a bit! But gradually we started to do things bit by bit, and 3yrs later, we finally had an MOTd Split and drove him for the first time - lots of grining!

Then I went over to Australia on a holiday with my Dad and bought back 3 giant souvenirs... a Split, a Bay and a Bug! We sold the Bay and kept the other 2.

We bought 'Ted' off a crazy man who sang about putting chicken poo on his head to make his hair grow (I kid you not - I have his CD!). He's a 62 Microbus and lives up with my parents in Leicestershire. Not sure when we'll ever get round to him, but will do at some point...

The Bug we bought back was 'Bella' - I bought her off a guy who was originally from Liverpool for £160! Very Happy bargain! I've spend the last 4yrs on and off trying to get her through the MOT - she doesn't seem to want to pass Rolling Eyes mostly due to new parts I've bought for her being faulty! Still, she has her next attempt soon, so hopefully she'll go through then..... maybe...

When I got her:

Now (same car, honest!!):

She's a bit lot of a madam - we have a love/hate relationship... she loves to hate me, and won't let me do any work on her without making me bleed! Evil or Very Mad

Next I got 'Robbie' - I'd wanted a Newbie ever since they came out, but couldn't afford one when I learnt to drive. I never got rid of the itch to buy one, and eventually had enough to buy a leftie TDi. He's a little character (don't listen to people who say they don't have one!) and I absolutely love him to bits and would never, ever sell him.

When I got him:

And now:

He's currently in semi retirement at my parents house until I can afford to insure him and Herbie (scroll down for details) at the same time. But as I'd never sell him (plus, I'd hardly get anything for an 11yr old leftie with 108k on the clock!), he's in a nice big barn with Ted until I have more money.

Next we bought Widget the Fidget - he's Steve's daily. He's a 2.5l 174ps T5 Kombi with twin sliding doors, body coloured bumpers, spoilers, side bars etc. Steve bought him new in 2006 and he's not put a foot wrong since. We've used him for everything - tip runs, daily, towing the aircooled lot, camping, moving house - all sorts.

He doesn't have the stripes any more, but I don't have any decent up to date pics - he gets dirty far too quickly!

And last up is Herbie - I'm training to be a driving instructor (hopefully qualify next month) and I will be using Herb to teach in Very Happy I said earlier that I couldn't afford to insure Robbie and Herbie at the same time - to insure them both would be over £1000 a year, which is loads when you have little money! Bizzarely Herbie's actually £200 cheaper to insure than Robbie - go figure!

So that's our lot. Yep, we have far too many, but we're crap at selling them. They all have reasons for why they're not for sale, and whilst they're not costing anything to store, we don't see the need to sell them. They make us happy, and that's what matters!
